The Register

The Register is a free email from Urban Human Resources. It arrives on the 2nd and the 16th of each month, in two halves: what changed in California and federal employment law, and one practical thing to do about it. Every issue carries a paragraph for professionals and a paragraph for the companies that hire them, because the same rule change lands differently on each side of the offer letter.

What is in each issue?

• One rule, threshold or deadline that changes what you get paid or what you have to file, with the date it takes effect.
• What it means for a salaried professional, in plain numbers.
• What it means for an employer, with the one decision it forces.
• New articles, tools and templates from the site, as they publish.
• One thing to do that week, small enough to finish in fifteen minutes.

Who is it for?

Urban professionals: first-generation and underrepresented professionals negotiating for the roles and pay they earned. And urban organizations: startups, minority-owned businesses and small employers who carry California’s rules without an HR department. Nothing in The Register assumes you have a lawyer on call or a mentor who already knows the rules.

How is it different from other HR newsletters?

It is short, it cites the source for every number, and it tells you what to do rather than what to think about. No sales sequences, no sponsored content, and your address is never sold, rented or shared. Every issue carries a one-click unsubscribe link and the business’s postal address.
